The scene is strangely familiar. We are at Saab Automobile's main gate in Trollhättan. White large metal letters forming the word SAAB top of the head office's roof and a drizzle settles like a gray blanket over a Saab 9-3 Aero beside the main gate.
The thoughts spinning, it is difficult to relate to the whole situation, I followed Saab's agony for several years as a reporter. Wrote a book about it. Alive with the front until 19 December 2011 when the largest bankruptcy began.
I step into our test car and there meets a familiar view and nybilsdoft. Let's be honest: The car is close to the exact same 9-3 that Saab was presented dorm room bedding 12 years ago. It has face-lifted for the first time in 2008 and then a second time just before the bankruptcy autumn 2011. This latest version was called the Saab 9-3 Griffin - who only had time produced in around dorm room bedding 300 copies before the bankruptcy. New time (carried dorm room bedding over to this car) include more plastic trim around the grille, dorm room bedding new front spoiler dorm room bedding and replacement of Saab logo on the tailgate against letters Saab.
On Nevs say proudly that in this new edition has replaced around 100 components. It sounds good, but it's because some providers have gone bankrupt or changed production for other brands. Among other things, the front seats new - the old supplier Lear closed in 2012 his factory in Trollhattan and now chairs come from a supplier in Gothenburg. The chairs have a better whiplash protection and the base is the same as including the Volvo XC90. But sadly, the Saab Unique headrests which was launched back in 1979 in the old 900 model replaced with the more anonymous.
The key is on the floor between the seats as before. We will start and go slow road from Saab's factory gate towards Trollhättan. The interior feels well screwed together and the materials and quality feel is on par with many newer competitors.
It sits higher than before in the new seats and the gasoline engine at 220 horsepower and turbo purrs softly. It is the same four-cylinder petrol engine that earlier - it has internal name L850 and already came when 9-3 was introduced in 2002. But this is an updated dorm room bedding version that was in the new 9-5 which came in 2010, but also in the new 9-3 Griffin just before the bankruptcy. A novelty is that the Bosch stand for control system which gives a little quicker response.
Bankruptcy estate simply had a stock of these GM engines standing. While the six-speed manual transmission and six-speed automatic transmission (+10 000) is the same as before - but Nevs hunt right now with high and low for new vendors.
I turn onto a winding dorm room bedding road. There, hanging dorm room bedding on with the good. Nevs have picked from the shelves and made a chassis that is slightly stiffer than before but not as hard as 9-3: ans old sports suspension. It is a well balanced mix, and the car does not feel bumpy.
You can even just buy it in black and silver and choose between automatic or manual ones. Nothing more. That means Nevs could cut the complexity and number of parts and basically halved the number of suppliers to around 400.
We go back. The thoughts spinning - why manufactures this petrol car at all? The answer is that one prepares for electric car production and want to get started in both supply chain and factory expertise with this "new-old" car.
The first elvarianterna of 9-3 starts being produced dorm room bedding right now. 200 electric vehicles will go to China, beginning in the spring. Series production is planned to start in the fall and to be able to buy electric cars in Sweden some time next year. All cars are sold through Saab's website.
Is it worth 279 000 dollars? The price is too high considering the age, but if you like Saab is a pleasant and well-built car. But it shows that it is 12 years old - there is neither modern infotainment systems or active safety systems. In fact, the new Saab car does not even meet the new EU requirements for pedestrian protection but Nevs has now been granted an exemption to sell 1,000 cars in Europe.
Since everyone asks: How will you do for Nevs? My answer is that it all depends on whether the Chinese owners have money. Extremely much money. In theory makes the right - it's in China, dorm room bedding the future of the auto industry is. And we should remember that if Nevs had not existed it would have been completely boarded up at Saab in Trollhättan. But I stress again that it takes a tremendous amount of money to get this on an even keel. The key is perseverance and that China's authorities dorm room bedding approve everything. Engine / transmission
Smooth ride on GM's old piece that has twin turbo. But full torque (think dorm room bedding power) comes later than on a modern car - at 2 000 rpm. Both the manual transmission and automatic transmission does its job without grumbling. Drive feeling
No active safety systems available and pedestrian safety is not up to the new EU rules. It's not a good start. Saab 9-3 received the highest rating in Euro Ncap 2002 - but since then the trend has been strongly forward. Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control Course Standard. Overall
Saab 9-3 Base Price: 279 000. Consumption: 7.4 litres/100 km. Carbon: 170 g / km. Engine: fyrcylindr
